Elin Harries has drawn together a group of talented players to present this thoughtful selection of music for soprano, violin and bass continuo.
Featuring songs by the Scottish composer Oswald and with a Scottish influence by the Dutch composer De Fesch, also Arne’s ballad adaptation of Handel’s opera aria ‘Credete al mio dolore’ followed by the virtuosic aria ‘Tornami a vagheggiar’. Both of these arias from Alcina were originally written by Handel for Arne’s future wife, the soprano, Cecilia Young.
The centrepiece of the programme is Vivaldi’s stunning cantata ‘Lungi dal vago volto’, notable for its ‘bird song’ imitation. The ‘bird song’ genre is also evident in Handel’s aria ‘With plaintive notes’ from Handel’s Samson.
The vocal music is complimented by instrumental interludes by Geminiani and Arne.
This is Linnet Baroque’s inaugural concert. The raison d'être of the group is to present informative and carefully researched programmes of English baroque and early classical vocal repertoire, much of it undeservedly languishing in obscurity, also featuring the virtuosic ‘bird song’ genre, so popular in the operas of Handel, Ariosti and their peers.
